Strange But Spectacular Courses

While boozy mini golf courses may be considered a strange concept in their own right (even if they are a lot of fun) they don’t even hold a candle to some of these bizarre courses.

Located on the grounds of Louisiana State Penitentiary, Angola, LA, is the Prison View Golf Course. The course which is operated by the Louisiana State Penitentiary Employee Recreation Committee, is a 9-hole, par 72 course measuring approx. 6000 yards.

Prison View Golf Course offers players a challenging round, practice facility, and Clubhouse. Number 1 tee box is elevated approximately 75 yards into the Tunica Hills and offers a spectacular view of Louisiana’s only maximum-security prison. The clubhouse features a restaurant that serves hotdogs, cold drinks, and other assorted snacks.

A short 30-minutes drive from the ancient city of Yogyakarta is the stunning Merapi Golf Course. This 18 holes, 6370 meters par 72 course, is located 800 meters above sea level and offers fantastic panoramic views of Mount Merapi with the hinterland of Yogyakarta and the Indian Ocean. The course also offers an onsite Clubhouse, Pro shop, and Restaurant.

What makes this course so strange is the fact it is situated so close to an active volcano, which erupted as recently as August 16, 2021, belching a cloud of ash into the air as far as 3.5 kilometres, blanketing local areas (including the course) in grey ash.

The Course offers players the chance to test their mettle against the low elevation, low barometric pressure, and even a coyote or two, that will make a golf ball dance in mysterious ways.

Capping off this list with what can only be described as ‘The World’s Longest Golf Course’. The 18-hole par 72 golf course at Nullarbor Links, spans a whopping 1,365 kilometres, with one hole situated in each participating town or roadhouse along the Eyre Highway, from Western to Southern Australia. Each hole includes a green tee and a somewhat rugged outback-style natural terrain fairway.
